Tunisia, Archaeological site of Sidi Jedidi

At 50 km from the city of Tunisia, and quite close to Hammamet (in the Yasmin Hammamet area), there is a former Roman settlement dating from the II-III centuries of our era. Now this ancient city is located in the archaeological zone of Sidi-Jedidi and is open to the public.

This city was very developed. On its territory, archaeologists discovered Roman villas with colorful mosaics, which at that time was only available to nobles, baths and other stone buildings. The ancient Roman road, which ran from Carthage itself, was also excavated. From these buildings it can be judged that the trade route from Hammamet passed through the settlement, or that the city itself was a major trading place.

Historians, studying even more ancient surviving foundations, suggest that the site of this city was once a Phoenician settlement, founded in the I century of our era. When this territory was seized by the Roman troops, Phoenician houses began to be gradually rebuilt, stone ones were built in their place, which have survived to the present day. The Romans built a temple in the settlement and even a small amphitheater. In the XIV century, the entire building was looted, and then destroyed by Catalan pirates. Since then, the city has practically become empty and no buildings have been restored.

Next to the remains of buildings in the Sidi-Jedidi zone are the burials of the II-III centuries of our era. History lovers will certainly be interested in ancient tombs, as well as catacombs, some of which have survived to our days almost intact.
