Sweden, Tannforssen Falls

The Tannforsen waterfall, located near the village of Duved and 22 km west of the Ore resort, is the largest waterfall in Sweden. Its total height is 38 meters, and the height of the fall of water is 32 meters. The level of water in Tannforsen strongly depends on the season. Usually the water flow reaches its peak in the second half of May: 200 – 400 cubic meters of water per second.

A record water flow was recorded during the spring flood of 1995 – 800 cubic meters of water per second. In the 20th century, the idea to use a waterfall for power generation was repeatedly put forward, but every time powerful public opinion saved Tannforsen from exploitation.

The area around Tannforsen is no less interesting than the waterfall itself. Due to the high and constant humidity, exclusive species of plants and animals can be found here. Two of the most unique groups in this area are mosses and lichens, and also a group of staphylinids (beetle type). A group of ocean lichens available in the Tannforsen area forms a whole plant community.

The peculiarity of representatives of this community is not only the fact that they grow on solid wood, which is normal for members of this class, but also that they grow on trees. To date, around the waterfall, 21 species of endangered wood lichen have been found, which today are not found anywhere else in Europe.

All interested persons can get to the cave located under the waterfall from February to April. And very near the waterfall is a park of sculptures of ice and snow.
