Sweden, Lund Botanical Garden

The Botanical Garden, located in the center of Lund, originates in the 19th century. Today, in its vast territory of 8 hectares, there are more than 7,000 different plant species, while about 2000 species that belong to nine different climatic zones can be seen only in specially constructed greenhouses.

Originally the park belonged to Lund Hospital, but in 1815 this land was given to the university, in whose jurisdiction the Botanical Garden is located and to this day. In addition to the few buildings of the university, the Botanical Museum and the Yellow Villa are also located on its territory.

Officially the garden was laid between 1862 and 1867, and Jacob Georg Agardh was appointed responsible for his planning, as well as the design of some buildings. Differences in the levels of the park’s landscape were achieved through the creation of artificial embankments and ponds. The park center has the right configuration, while the outer parts are made in a more free form. The size of the park, which was in the 19th century, is significantly different from the modern ones, because in the period from 1888 to 1950 the territory on which the park is located was expanded several times.

In 1974, the Lund Botanical Garden was recognized as a national historical monument. The main task of the garden staff is to provide a multidisciplinary base in botany, horticulture and ecology not only for university needs and research, but also for kindergartens, schools, and the general public.

The park annually receives up to half a million visitors; open daily, admission is free.
