Sri Lanka, Holy City of Kandy
Located among the hills, the city is very picturesque. A kind of his necklace is the wide river Mahaveli. In the center of the city is an artificial lake. A special attraction of Kandy is the deeply revered by the tourists temple of Dalad Maligawa, where the “Holy Tooth” of Buddha is stored, once snatched by one of the disciples from the funeral pyre of Buddha, and then brought to Sri Lanka by the princess.
In late July – early August, annual ten-day carnival processions with many elephants, torchbearers, musicians and dancers are held in Kandy. This is the only period of the year when the sacred relic leaves its temple – on a richly decorated elephant.
This is an unforgettable sight for all who visit this time in Sri Lanka. 4 km from Kandy is the Royal Botanical Garden in Peradeniya, which is one of the largest in Asia. Here grows a huge number of tropical plants, rare species of palm trees, more than 1000 species of orchids and a landmark garden – a huge tree-umbrella.
