South Korea, Wonghudan

Wonhudan is located in one of the municipalities of Seoul – Jung-gu. The Vonghudan Altar was built in 1897 so that rituals prescribed by the cult of Heaven could be performed at this place. This altar is also called Vondan or Khvongudan.

The cult of Heaven preceded Taoism and Confucianism, appeared during the reign of King Songjon, the sixth ruler of the Korean state of Korea. It was King Songjon who was the first of the rulers of Korea who conducted religious rituals aimed at obtaining a good harvest. For some time ritual ceremonies were not conducted, and in 1897 King Kojon, the 26th ruler of the Joseon Dynasty (from 1863 to 1897), resumed them, and became the first emperor of the Korean Empire.

The Wongudan Altar Complex is located between the Pukhan Mountain and Namsan Mountains, and from the point of view of Feng Shui is located in a favorable place. Vonghudan is a granite structure and was used to sacrifice animals. Also on the territory of the complex was a fountain and a three-level altar in the form of an octagon – Hvongungu, which in translation means “yellow palace-sanctuary”. Unfortunately, part of the complex in 1913 was destroyed during the reign of the Japanese colonial government, only the altar of Hvongungu survived – a majestic structure protected by stone figures. Near the altar are three drums, decorated with figures of dragons. They resemble tools that were used during the sacrifice of Heaven. These drums were installed in 1902. At the place where there was another part of the complex, now there is a hotel.
