South Korea, Namdaemun Gate

The Namdaemun Gate is one of the eight gates of Seoul in the city wall that surrounded the city during the Joseon Dynasty. The Namdaemun Gate is located between Seoul Station (central railway station) and the central square of Seoul Plaza. Next to this historical monument is the historical market of Namdaemun, which is open around the clock.

The official name of the gate is Namdaemun – Sunnemun, which in translation means “the gate of lofty ceremonies”. The gates were built in the XIV century in the form of a pagoda and in the list of the national heritage of the Republic of Korea occupy the first place.

Once the gate of Namdaemun was one of the three main gates in the city wall of Seoul, the height of the gate was about 6 meters. Before the fire in 2008, when the wooden pagoda of the Namdaemun Gate burned down, this building was one of the oldest wooden buildings in Seoul. The construction of the gate was started in 1395 and ended in 1398. In 1447 the gates were rebuilt, and periodically reconstructed over the centuries.

In 1907, the gates were closed to the public after the authorities conducted an electric tram line alongside. The gate of Namdaemun was badly damaged during the Korean War. In 1961 the gates were restored and reopened in 1963. The next restoration of the gates was in 2005, around the gates the lawn was broken, and in 2006 a grand opening was held.

In 2010, the restoration of the gate was started, which ended in 2013.
