Hallasan is an extinct volcano, and is also considered to be the highest mountain in South Korea. The area around the volcano is declared a national park, called the National Park of the Hallasan Mountains.

The National Park of the Hallasan Mountains was founded in 1970 and became the ninth national park in the country. In 2002, the park was included in the World Network of Biosphere Reserves of UNESCO, and in 2007 the park was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. In Korea, there is a list of national monuments of Korea, and the volcano in it takes 182 place.

It is worth noting that the Hallasan volcano is also called the Khanla mountain or Hulla mountain, and in the past the volcano was called quite differently – Buak, Wonsan, Burasan, Seonsan, etc. The Hallasan volcano occupies most of the island of Jeju, therefore very often the volcano is associated with the island itself . There is even a local saying that “Hallasan is Jeju, and Jeju is Hallasan.” The volcano is clearly visible from all places on the island, but its top is always hidden in the clouds.
