Finland, Volkov House Museum
Volkov’s house-museum is an old wooden merchant’s house built over the years: from 1826 to 1905 in the center of Lappeenranta, next to the town hall.
Initially, the owner of the building was a wealthy merchant Claudelin, then in 1872 the ownership of the house passed to the Russian merchant, a former serf peasant Ivan Volkov, who became the ancestor of four generations of the trade dynasty. In 1983, his descendants presented the famous house to the city, and in 1993, a museum was opened in it, telling about the merchant life of those times and preserving Orthodox traditions.
The interior of the house-museum contains unique household and antique objects and decorations. Inspection of the building begins with a visit to the women’s bedroom and toilet room, and then, after going through the living room, office and dining room, you find yourself in another bedroom, located next to the children’s room, and get into the kitchen.
On the museum site there is a small bakery, in which traditional Russian bread is still baked according to classic recipes. In the restaurant “Volkoff”, which opened in 1998, first-class chefs will prepare a delicious lunch for you.
In a small shop, located in the house-museum, you can buy various souvenirs and gifts for your friends and loved ones, especially on the eve of Easter and Christmas. These days the territory of the museum turns into a venue for festivals.
The house-museum works daily, but only in summer.
