Finland, Gems Gallery

The gems gallery was opened in the city of Kemi in the premises of the former maritime customs. The building was built in 1912 in the Art Nouveau style by the architect Walter Tomen.

It contains the richest collection in Europe, consisting of more than 3000 gems, minerals and various ornaments, transferred to the museum by the jeweler Teivo Urua in 1994, who collected polished and rough stones from early childhood. The collector found or bought his exhibits during numerous trips to various parts of the world.

The museum has a golden crown, weighing 2 kg, with four large pearls, specially made for the only uncrowned king of Finland – Väino. The exhibition presents copies of crowns that belonged to the monarchs of Great Britain and Scandinavia. The exact copy of Maria Antoinette’s necklace sparkling with 647 diamonds strikes with its exceptional beauty.

Visiting the museum, you will hear the mysterious stories about the lives of kings and their fools, whose destinies are closely connected with iridescent stones.

In the local shop you can buy for yourself a lucky stone, jewelry, children’s toys, various souvenirs, books, stamps and postcards.
