The city of Harer is located in the eastern part of the country, on a plateau, cut by deep gorges, surrounded by deserts and savannas. Its fortified historical part, surrounded by walls built between the 13th and 16th centuries – Dzhugol, is sacred to Muslims. Harar-Jugol is said to be the fourth most religious city of Islam, has 82 mosques, three of which were founded in the 10th century, and 102 places of worship.
