Croatia, Archaeological Museum

One of the centers of the Makarska Riviera, the town of Baska Voda receives thousands of tourists annually. A popular attraction is the Archaeological Museum, which belongs to the local municipality. The museum is small in size and extremely rich in collection. It is located in a historic building by the sea. His specimens are dated to a long period from 2000 BC. e. until the 7th century AD.

Most of the objects presented in the museum and being its pride were discovered by archaeologists during excavations on an elevation to the west of the center of Baska Voda. A long time ago there was a settlement founded in the early Bronze Age. Then the ancient Romans settled here, also left behind a lot of artifacts. The place of archaeological research is now turned into a kind of open-air museum. Scientists have recreated the dwelling of an ancient Roman, where glassware and jugs are displayed, in which food was previously stored.

In several rooms of the Archaeological Museum is a little crowded. On the perimeter of the rooms are equipped with special, well-lit niches, where the most valuable exhibits are on display. Other finds of archeologists are stored in glass cases. In the museum you can see ancient, carefully restored amphorae, round, pot-bellied vessels, spearheads, ancient coins, cleaned of sand and mud, funeral urns, oil lamps, remains of columns, tombstones decorated with carvings and inscriptions in Latin. Another hall of the museum is dedicated to the Byzantine era. There are in the Archaeological Assembly Baska Waters and objects relating to a later historical period.
